mentioned)- "The Tiger Hunters by Reginald George Burton (b. 1864) makes fascinating

reading. The hair raising accounts of the writer's adventures in the wild in Indian jungles, keep

the reader impulsively absorbed in the book. His encounters with beasts have heart throbbing

and bewildering. The author was a hunter of tigers instinctively and often risked his life.

"Besides hunting episodes, the book is replete with events of author's involvement with India,

where he passed his early boyhood and later, prime of youth. The book contains the real-life

experiences and events of the author's life with minute details of observations and accurate

memories of his remote past. "In the whole book, there is not a tinge of disgust or a version for

the native inhabitant's way of life or the rituals as can often be inferred from the writings of the

English writers of the Raj days. "Burton is nostalgic about his boyhood days in India where he

studied and sailed to England after his father passed away during an encounter with the

brigands at the head of his regiment. He returned to India with great eagerness

Ltd Ed.,671/1000 xi+387pp., portrait frontis., 15 plates. Longmans. 1975. Distinguished white

hunter & African traveller who was Killed in Action (4th Jan 1917) fighting the Germans in

East Africa with 25th R.F., Frontiersmen Battalion. Orig. dark blue cloth, gilt, sp. somewhat

worn & a little marked but sound. Frederick Courtney Selous (1851-1917) was above all a great

hunter and adventurer. He was also a naturalist, patriot and pioneer. He was very much a man

of his times and yet was one of the few men of his men of his day who could see beyond the

narrow vision of colonialism. The name of Selous lives on in one of the great game reserves of

East Africa. Many of those who are fortunate enough to have visited the Selous Game Reserve

in Tanzania will have seen Selous' grave, near to the spot where he fell in battle. This is a book

of lively anecdotes which explores the qualities of an extraordinary man who was the epitome

of the great, fair-minded Englishman who lived in the heyday of British Imperialism. Loyalty to

"King and country" brought Selous to his death as an intelligence officer in the campaign to

capture Tanganyika from the Germans. Selous, a curious, lively child grew up to be strong in

mind, stature and the ideals of the time. He went on adventures, hunted and collected specimens

in Asia Minor, Europe and Africa. In this book we see the affection and respect he commanded

from those who met him, including Teddy Roosevelt. The re-issue of this biography is very

welcome. The modern reader not only gains an insight into the life of the man but also the

history of colonial Africa and the genesis of some of the political and ecological issues of

today.

written this book with the idea of instructing my grandfathers. Nor is it composed of strings of

technical words that no one but an advanced scientist could hope to understand. What I have set

down is the outcome of my own experiments and adventures in the school of experience, and is

primarily for beginners of various ages. And if they should profit by my suggestions, and if

others of the great brotherhood of those who delight in using a gun and appreciate the thousand

and one contingent pleasures thereof should find some satisfaction in my edeas and

reminiscences, that will be a reward above the shekels of gold. It is not given to all of us to be

exalted among the `six best shots in England` - of this I have already supplied more than my

share of evidence. But hte more a man knows of the craftsmanship of shooting, the fuller, I am

certain, is the bag of his pleasure.

Wild Beasts & their Ways - Baker

Unit Price £75.00

Description:

Macmillan, London, United Kingdom, 1891

Good No Jacket, Hardcover 2nd Edition

Macmillan, 1891. Book Condition: Good. H. Dixon (illustrator).2nd Edition (1st as a single

volume, previous 1890 1st edition was in 2 volumes) Worn, bumped and torn spine. Hinges

pulled. Explorer Samuel Baker's lifetime travel and adventure in pursuit of big game in India,

Ceylon and various parts of Africa are recalled. Few persons are aware of the extreme

quickness with which an elephant can kick, and the great height that can be reached by this

mischievous use of the hind foot. I have frequently seen an elephant kick as sharp as a small

pony, and the effect of a blow from so ponderous a mass propelled with extreme velocity may

be imagined. This is a peculiar action, as the elephant is devoid of hocks, and it uses the knees

of the hind legs in a similar manner to those of a human being.
